Akihabara and 2k540

On Monday we headed to Akihabara which used to be the electronics mecca of Japan. I guess in some ways it still is, but it's changed to accommodate the "Otaku", nerd, crowd with anime and cosplay. The above image is the main drag with the massive SEGA shop.

Mindy and her inner "Otaku" loved this hot dog statue outside of a...you guessed it, a hot dog store.

Only in Tokyo will you find a Gundam Cafe and it was packed.

Our main reason for going this way was to take Mindy back to the shopping at 2k540 which is a 10 minute walk from the Akihabara JR Station.

The shops here are all from local or regional craftsman and everything is outstanding in quality and design.

We shopped the lot and stopped for lunch at a cafe located in 2k540 called Boo. It has a design store attached to it and it was just a small shop with a bar and a few tables. I had a burger (just the meat) with an eggplant sauce, rice and a small amount of mashed potatoes. Mindy had a fantastic pasta dish that was ice cold (great for the summer) and had marvelous fresh tomatoes.

After lunch we headed back to our favorite shop,  Hocoa, which I mention in a previous blog entry. Their craftsmanship in different wood designs and products are just incredible.

While at the store, we purchased the block above that display Takahiro's name in the kanji that Mindy and I picked out. The characters were laser engraved into the solid black walnut. We are really excited for this piece - something that will last a long time and, for us, means a lot.

We stopped at a Pronto Cafe for an afternoon pick-me-up. Tiramisu, Mont Blanc and coffee. Taka didn't enjoy his Tiramisu too much and left it on Mindy's shirt. Oh well.

No Tiramisu on my shirt...for today at least. ;)

Headed back home on the train!

  1. Found your blog by accident, was searching for the hot dog statue Mindy is standing in front of. Then once I found it, I had to read the whole thing. Congratulations and best of luck, your family looks wonderful.
